Fall HVAC Prep Checklist for Ohio Homeowners: Get Ready to Switch From Cooling to Heating

Homeowner changing a clean air filter into a gas furnace for fall HVAC prep in an Ohio home

August is the last stretch of the cooling season, but Ohio weather doesn’t wait for the calendar. One week it can be in the 80s, and the next you’re waking up to a cold house. When that first chilly morning hits, you want your furnace ready—not testing it on the day you need it.

The short answer: set aside an hour over the next few weeks to walk through the checklist below. If anything looks wrong, book a professional heating tune-up now, before the first wave of cold-weather service calls.

Why timing matters in Ohio

Fall here can swing from warm afternoons to near-freezing nights within days. Furnace repair calls spike the first time the temperature drops because systems that sat idle all summer fail on startup. Doing your prep in late summer—while schedules are still open—means you’re not waiting in line when the heat is actually needed.

Your pre-season furnace checklist

Work through these in order. Most are fast, inexpensive, and don’t require a technician.

  • Change or inspect your air filter. A dirty filter restricts airflow and makes your furnace work harder. If it’s been more than 90 days, replace it before first use. Not sure on timing? See our guide to how often you should replace your furnace filter.
  • Clear the space around your furnace. Remove stored boxes, tools, or laundry from the area so air can move freely and nothing sits near a heat source.
  • Test the thermostat in HEAT mode. Switch it to heat and raise the setpoint briefly. You should hear the system respond. If your thermostat runs on batteries, replace them.
  • Check every vent and register. Vacuum dust and make sure furniture, rugs, or curtains aren’t blocking airflow in any room.
  • Unblock and inspect the outdoor unit. Keep the area around your AC condenser clear of leaves and debris so it can run efficiently for any remaining warm days.
  • Confirm you have a working carbon monoxide detector. Test it before the first furnace run. If you don’t have one on each floor, add one. This is a safety step, not optional.
  • Know the normal startup signs. On the first run of the season, a brief burning-dust smell is normal as settled dust burns off. Persistent smoke or a strong odor is not.

What to expect on that first fire-up

It’s common for a furnace that hasn’t run in months to hum briefly, click, or give off a light dusty smell when it first turns on. That’s usually harmless. It’s not normal for the furnace to refuse to start, short-cycle, or blow cold air. If you see any of those, don’t keep cycling the system—that can do more harm. Learn more about the common causes when your furnace isn’t working.

Six warning signs that it’s time to call a pro

  • Furnace won’t turn on, or makes a loud clicking noise without firing up
  • Runs for a few minutes then shuts off repeatedly (short cycling)
  • Blows cold air in heat mode
  • Weak airflow from vents
  • Unusual banging, squealing, or rumbling
  • A gas smell anywhere near the unit (leave the area and call for service immediately)

How to avoid the scramble

The best way to skip fall furnace problems is a heating tune-up before the season. A technician checks the heat exchanger, blower, igniter, and safety controls so small issues are caught while they’re cheap to fix—not on a freezing night. See what’s included in our preventative maintenance service or learn about the ProTune Comfort Club, which covers both your heating and AC tune-ups each year with priority scheduling and no overtime service fees. If you’d rather book a one-time tune-up, we can schedule that too.
